Are you Protected?

This last winter there were several fires in the apartments around me. Thank goodness none of them were in my building. It still makes me think about what if it happened to me. I, for one, have renter’s insurance. Hopefully, it is enough to cover all the electronics I own. Do you have renter’s insurance, or if you have a house, homeowners insurance? If you don’t you had better look into it. You never know when something can happen. From a kitchen fire to flooding. It CAN happen to you, so be prepared. I know I am.

Spring Cleaning

I’m trying to do my version of spring cleaning this weekend. I am a neat freak so my place isn’t really all that bad to begin with. I mean, it’s just me 90% of the time so I’m fairly good at picking up after myself and my cats. Yesterday my kiddo and I cleaned the front half of the apartment. We wiped down cabinets, appliances, walls, doors, and dusted. Today is the back half of the place. This will include the cleaning out of clothes from the closet and chest of drawers that we no longer wear. Then there is the bathroom and the cat’s area under the sink. The cats are pretty good about keeping themselves clean. At least I don’t have to use industrial supplies to clean up after them. I love having a clean home.

Told you I was bored. I made a to do list of cleaning projects I need to do around the apartment. Now that I have decided that I am going to stay there a while longer I really want to get that “I live HERE” impression anytime someone comes over (which is almost never, but hey, it’s my place). I need to hang my dad’s painting of Parliament and my Wizard of Oz plates. I also want to get a real bedroom suit and maybe some discount rugs to help keep the place from looking so bleak. Beige is the colour theme in my apartment, as it is with most apartments, but that doesn’t mean I have to live with it. I do have black curtians in both the living room and the bedroom. Maybe I need some decorative pillows for the livingroom, too. I have some, but I’m tired of the design. Maybe I can just get some fabric and re-cover the ones I have. I bet that would be cheaper! I think I need to find a thrift store. So much I want to do and so little money to do it with!

When I got home from work yesterday there was tape on my door as though someone has put something up on my door and then it was removed. It was really very odd. I do live in an apartment complex and when they leave notices they usually leave them rolled up between the door nob and the frame. I wonder who it was and what it was. They have been doing a lot of renovations around here. I wonder if they are considering installing a doorbell button. They’ve already replaced the outside lights to the more energy efficient type. They’ve painted all the buildings and I’ve heard that some of the empty units are getting new appliances. It would be nice to have new appliances, but I also pay low rent. According to a woman who works in the office, I pay less than she does. I don’t know that I could afford a ‘new’ unit. Besides, the carpet in my unit will have to be replaced and that’s gonna cost me anyway. I’m better off just staying here. Its actually a really nice place and I like it. Besides, it’s MINE.

I have just learned about a cool new device. With a KVM switch I’d be able to control both of my desktop computers and my laptop all with the same keyboard and mouse. Okay, only a geek like myself could get excited about something like this, but I didn’t even know this device existed! Okay, they aren’t that cheap, but now that I know something like this is out there I’m going to have to rethink my entire home network. I think I’m going to have a geek overload!

Apartment Living

Some days I like living in an apartment. If something breaks all I have to do is call maintenance and within a few days it’s fixed. They’ve fixed my water heater, my front door, and my toilet twice (a leak and replaced the seat). But on the other hand if I wanted to put stainless steel tile as a back splash over my stove or maybe paint my cabinets I can’t do it. So I guess that is the trade off. I don’t mind so much really. This is my place and it is in my name and no one can take it from me. The security is totally worth all of it.
