Table for Five is having a DVD giveaway for people who share their proposal story. When I read her post I got to thinking about how my husband proposed and it’s a good one if I do say so myself. Sometimes I forget how romantic he really can be.

It was back around Christmas of 2002 when he proposed. We had been living together for three years and by this time we had given up on correcting people when they referred to the other as “Your Husband” or “Your Wife”. It was just easier to let it slide than explain it over and over to the same people. We had not gotten married sooner because when we met we were both going through a divorce and neither one of us wanted to jump right back into marriage.

Now, by this time we had a shared bank account (which I kept balanced). He would complain that he could never surprise me with anything because I’d know the moment he ran anything through the account (hey, I’m in accounting, it’s what I do). Okay, keep this in mind through the story.

That year my office was having a Christmas at a local Country Club. We were a small company and spouses were invited. I had worked there for several years and between the six employees we all knew each other and our family’s fairly well. Sadly my husband could not get off work to attend. But he had been acting weird the whole week. Like he was up to something. I even mentioned this to my boss. She told me not to worry about it that it was probably nothing (do you see where this is going?).

Since I was the “office manager” at the time I was the last one to leave for the party. I had to lock up the office and make sure the voice mail was set up, etc. So I was the last one to arrive at the party. Low and behold there sat my husband all cleaned up and looking sharp! WOW! I thought this was my surprise. That wasn’t all. After the lunch the boss lady gave out promotions and awards. I got the employee of the year award! How exciting! So THIS was what those two were up to. My boss lady and my husband were in cahoots.

But that wasn’t all. Once the business stuff was over with and I was getting a big hug from a co-worker who said there was one more thing. I turned around and there was my husband on one knee with a ring! I am getting tears in my eyes just thinking about it. Turned out he had gotten his Christmas bonus from work, went and cashed it, then bought my ring with the whole check! He had been driving around with it in his truck for a week. He said not telling me was killing him. No wonder he was acting so strange! And EVERYONE in my office knew about it, but me.

We didn’t get married until January of 2004, but by then it was just a formality. We took a Friday afternoon off and went down to the court house then spent the weekend out of town. Today we are just as much in love as we were when we first met. No, it’s not exciting and no we aren’t mushy all the time. We have found a nice place called comfortable and I am VERY happy.
